What you’ll get from this post.
My goal in this post, is to show you how to master the the print mixing game like a pro, and help you embrace this trend and see it with fresh eyes. Soon you’ll be like the street style fashionistas, you’ll put them together in unexpected ways that turn out to be very refreshing and interesting.

On the other hand, though note that you may already be mixing textures without knowing or giving it much thought. Remember when you donned leather gloves with a wool coat, over that lace or silk dress in the winter time…well you were mixing textures, now you just need to take it a step further.

Although, I recognize that mixing textures like the example above, almost comes naturally, especially in the fall and winter months, prints and patterns is a different ball game altogether. Therefore, I’ll give you tips on how to up your game or get started.

Mixing prints is something I’ve always loved to do. I love to layer different fabrics, textures, colors, and prints to add depth and a fun unexpected twist to my look. Like I did here, here and here. Even more, if you follow me on IG.
Tips to master print mixing like a pro
When mixing prints, remember these key points:
- Stripes are considered neutrals, they pair well with other prints.
- Plaids and stripes mix well together
- When deciding if two prints will work together…Focus on color, not the print.
- Be sure they share a common color
- keep key pieces within the same color palette
- An easy way to dip your toes in the print mixing pool is to start off with layering a plaid coat over your outfit,
- then add an animal print accessory, or better yet, another plaid in a larger or smaller print.
- If your outfit feels too busy, layer on, or add on a classic neutral to ground your look.
- Pair large and small prints together
- add animal print, which is another neutral, to add some edge and a pop of color to a monochromatic print ensemble
- print mixing is not just about prints and florals, feel free to also mix textures like leather, lace, and wool to give your outfit some interest and depth.
